New Hair Resolutions

With the start of every new year brings reflection and many people look at the past to see what they can improve on for the future. The most popular of resoultions for the new year seem to be fitness related, from losing weight, improving overall health and even to gain weight (for those of the lighter end of the weight spectrum), but what about hair? I think for 2012 I will focus on growing my hair out. Currently my hair is armpit length…stretched of course…my goal for this year is to reach bra strap length. After I formulate a simple plan I will fill you guys in.

So chime in: Have any of you made any healthy hair resolutions or goals for 2012? If so what are your plans on achieving your goals?

Tales of a “Lazy Natural”

Happy (Late) October!

It occurred to me this morning as I styled my hair in the same old boring style that I’d become a “lazy natural.” I’ve been wearing my hair in the same style everyday for about a month with no motivation to try anything new. It’s not even all that cute of a style either…just a basic pony puff with a hump/bouffant or a set of twists in the front. Although I’ve gotten several comments on it…it’s my “I don’t have time or motivation to style my hair today” staple hairstyle. So…what’s your fallback style when you are pressed for time?

Detangling: Conditioner vs Oil

Since day one of becoming au naturale I’ve always used a “cheapie” conditioner (think V05, Suave) for detangling purposes. These conditioners provided just enough slip to aid in working out knots and tangles. About a month ago, I stood in the shower soaked with my eyes tightly shut blindly searching for my detangling conditioner but instead of V05, I unknowingly grabbed my Carol’s Daughter Lisa’s Hair Elixer. Before I’d noticed a difference, I’d squirted the oily elixer into my cupped hand. Now I know you’ve priced quality hair products and you know “just tossing it down the drain” was not an option. I decided to give it a try…if I failed I could always put the V05 on top of the oil and keep it moving.

I smoothed the product on my hair and noticed a huge difference. Detangling that day was a breeze but it could have been a fluke. I HAD to try this again. My hair felt great after the wash, a softness that seemed to last until next wash day. My hair was just…well…different.

The only thing I didn’t really like was the smell. The essential oils used in Carol’s Daughter make for a medicine smell and I’m more of a fruity smelling kinda lady. After I run out of the Hair Elixer I’m going to experiment with my own herbal infused oils.

This has become apart of my weekly regimen and I encourage you all to give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Beauty 4 Ashes – Update!

Greetings! A while ago I did a review/rave on Beauty4Ashes products. I just wanted to update and let everyone know that I no longer use their products. While I loved the products I tried, I’ve found various homemade (as well as store bought) products that work well with my hair for a more affordable price. If you are using their products please leave a comment with your experience! I would love love love to hear from you!

I’m Back…But Let’s Comment on 2010…

Yes I know it’s 2011 but I just had to comment on 2010. I took the entire year off from hair. I washed every 2 – 3 weeks but hell I was content with just doing a wash n go. I was too busy to worry about my hair and my wash n gos were getting cuter by the month.

In Feb 2010 I gave birth to my youngest daughter. I barely had time to eat in 2010 (doesn’t look like it though ) let alone worry about how I styled my hair. Kinky Curly (KCCC) was/is a staple product and I love the flexibility of it.

What snapped me back into hair-reality is breakage. Not massive amounts…just small tiny hairs left in my hand after a good wash. Now that’s I’ve reached APL (armpit length) I figure I can protective style my way to MBL (midback length).

I find it amazing that even with breakage I’ve managed to stumble upon APL. I get a little sad thinking about where I could be but you live an ya learn.

It’s 2011 and I’m back on da grind…hair grind that is.

Great News…All Around!

Hello world! I just want to give everyone a quick update. I’m pregnant and due Feb 6 2010 AND my husband and I both got promoted! The month of June has been a windfall of great news for us. I’ve been dead tired and I haven’t really had time to update the blog with school, work and the added pressure of being tired. I did try a new product (Beyond the Zone’s Noodle Head) and I like it a little. I’m still looking for something else to give me defined yet soft curls. This leaves my hair a little hard and it takes a while to dry. I have not tried Kinky Curly Curling Custard YET! I will one day. Most of the reviews on Youtube liked the product but it seems they mostly went back to using their old products since KCCC was so expensive. Anywho…I’m rambling on…I just wanted to share my news! I’ll update again soon! Keep Rocking the Natural!!

Product Review: Cantu Shea Butter Leave In

I’ve been hearing so much about this product via Youtube or the various message boards that I frequent but had never cared to try it. I found it in Walmart for the low low of $4.89 plus tax. I must admit that this product just might become a staple.

How I used Cantu Shea Butter LIC: First I washed with Organix Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner and followed with a 3 minute hair mayo treatment using Africa’s Best Organics Hair Mayo. After rinsing my hair completely I applied the Cantu Shea Butter LIC, sealed with Castor Oil and braided 2 French Braids. That’s it. After just one application I’ve noticed less breakage and over all stronger hair. I would like to add that I’ve also recently upped my protein so I’m sure that has a lot to do with it as well.

Bottom line: Good product, great price, not so great smell.

9 Hour Two Strand Twists

I know I promised to do a hair update a week ago but I have been extremely busy with life. Today I finally sat down and gave twisting a second try. Yes, the title is correct. It took me nine stinking hours to do these twists, mainly because I was watching TV, on LHCF and browsing videos on YouTube. The very first time I twisted my hair I was 2 months natural and it was…Ok. Not a look I was ready for as I only had about 4 inches of hair. My hair is currently 6.25 inches and my twists this time looked much better than before.

I used raw shea butter to twist and when it was all done I used aloe mixed with castor oil on my ends. I twisted on dry hair. To get the twists to lay where I wanted I also added the Aloe/Castor Oil mixed onto a few twists to shrink them up.
